Caffeine Addiction

Imagine a boring day at the office. You have finished your work, and the environment is so peaceful that you find your eyes starting to feel heavy. You feel lightheaded, and your body suddenly feels like it’s having a rebellion and refuses to move.

The most typical response of a person would be to get up, grab a cup and spoon, and march away to the coffee maker for a cup of that hot, steaming drink that revives a person’s senses and pulls him away from sleep: coffee.

Coffee contains caffeine, an ergogenic that reduces the feeling like you’re going to drop off to sleep. As a result, people find that effect invigorating, and as a result, they start depending on coffee to reduce their exhaustion spells. A dependence on coffee would cause the body to adjust and resist its stimulating effects, thus rendering it effective. But people just don’t give up. Instead they just increase their caffeine intake to a level that they will feel the effects once again.

That’s when caffeine addiction kicks in.  At this point, a person is now dependent on caffeine that he will find it difficult to pull out his system. When he does so, he finds himself feeling irritated so easily. He will always be in a sour mood, affecting his relationships with the people around him. And that’s about only the psychological effects of caffeine.

Like heroin, cocaine and other narcotics, caffeine is a very addictive drug. Since it’s a drug, it affects the body in some way when consumed in more than moderate amounts.

Health Effects of Caffeine

  • Caffeine is actually very acidic. Its acid content can cause a coffee addict to suffer from ulcers in the stomach. Upon entering our bloodstream, our bodies experience increased loss of calcium in our urine.
  • Caffeine can also result in depletion of vitamin C in the body, because it destroys the vitamin. Because of this, our body’s ability to eliminate mucus in the event of colds is impaired. Cold remedies actually carry caffeine, and too much dependence on this can cause our body to have difficulty in kicking off colds instead of the other way around.
  • Caffeine can lead to nervous system disorders, complications in the gastrointestinal tract, and fibrocystic breast tumors.
  • It is suggested that caffeine can cause men to become sterile.
  • Women who drink coffee too much during their pregnancy may inadvertently cause her child to have birth defects because caffeine can pass through the placenta. Caffeine can also enter into the mother’s breast milk.
  • Caffeine can increase blood pressure and cause an addict to suffer from hypertension.
  • Caffeine can cause heart diseases. The pancreas and bladder can also contract cancer because of high caffeine intake.
  • Caffeine can cause our heart to beat slower.
  • Caffeine lessens the blood going to the brain, but at the same time it allows blood to flood the cardiac muscles.
  • Caffeine causes hyperactivity when taken in high amounts by children.
