Fighting Porn Addiction Doesn’t Have to Be So Hard

Pornography is regarded by most as repulsive and morally unacceptable. The images and videos of men and women buck naked and engaged in sexually explicit acts are touted by the general society as degrading, especially towards women as they are shown as mere sex toys by the men that they are engaging in the act with.

However, despite these negative sentiments towards pornography, more and more people are succumbing to porn addiction. Why is it that, even if society frowns at pornography in general, people still subscribe to these materials at a high rate?

Insecurity: The Root of Porn Addiction

Everyone is exposed to pornography at some point in our lives, although people’s reactions vary greatly upon viewing the explicit materials. Some people may be offended, some may find themselves aroused. However, arousal may occur even if people are mildly offended by the presentation. At some point, some people may reject the materials and avoid more exposures entirely. Some, reacting positively to pornography, may find themselves repeatedly exposing themselves.

A person’s insecurity towards himself/herself is pointed to as the main reason for a person’s vulnerability to become addicted to porn. Studies show that people who become aroused by exposure to pornographic materials seek sexual gratification either through self-stimulation or actual sex with a partner. Those that have confidence would seek out sexual partners. However, those that suffer from insecurities because of some physical disability would have second thoughts of seeking out a partner to engage in sex with for fear of rejection. Thus, these people would tend to seek out sexual gratification through masturbation, either by fantasizing or while viewing pornography.

Repeated exposure to pornography significantly alters a porn addict’s view towards the opposite sex. A man addicted to porn may find himself viewing women only as sex toys, made only to satisfy his cravings. He may not realize that forced sex is a crime, because for him women are meant to service his libido and are devoid of the right to refuse to do so. The rising cases of rape in society are attributed to the abundance of pornography in the World Wide Web, in video stores and in print media. This is because porn addicts fail to acknowledge the feelings of the opposite sex towards sexual intercourse.

Not only that, porn addiction has a significant negative impact towards a porn addict’s social life. He/she may be withdrawn from the people around him for fear that they will discover his/her obsession for the explicit materials. Intimate relationships are affected negatively, as porn addicts would tend to prefer spending time watching pornographic materials and neglect their partners. The partner themselves would be subjected to insecurity within themselves and emotional pain.

 Fighting Porn Addiction

Porn addiction exists when a person begins using pornography excessively. He/she may start to depend on it to satiate their urges through masturbation, or to reduce stress and anxiety. It is important that, in fighting porn addiction, one should realize and admit to himself that the problem exists. Counselor Joe Dallas says that one should confront the truth that the excessive dependence on pornography to satisfy sexual urges could be physically, emotionally and socially destructive to a person. He said that once a porn addict realizes that his obsession would damage him, it would a catalyst for him/her to develop an attitude that he/she must get rid of their addiction or suffer the consequences.
