Overcoming Porn Addiction: Problems and Motivation

Pornography addiction is one of the main problems that plague society these days. With the volume of pornography available openly in the magazine stands, and in video stores, and the Internet, more and more people are snagged by this addiction everyday.

An addiction with pornography is linked to several factors, mainly a person’s self-esteem. A person who has low self-esteem suffers from being unable to pursue outlets for their sexual urges because they are not confident of their ability to hook up with someone with whom they can engage in sexual activities. Thus, these people willingly turn to pornography, because in it, they can find someone with whom they can engage with sexually (through masturbation) that is willing and submissive to their needs.

Porn addiction has several devastating effects on a person. First, he becomes consumed by sexual fantasies that he often neglects other things. Second, he begins to have a radically distorted view about women. He begins to see them as toys, as something less than human. Worse, some pornographic videos show women that have been artificially made up to look like children, and this would lead some porn addicts to view children in a sexual light. There are even videos that show women submitting to unsolicited sexual intercourse after sometime, which could lead a porn addict to think that women like to be forced to sex. These distorted views could lead a porn addict to commit sexually related crimes as he becomes dissatisfied with merely viewing porn and masturbating, and starts to act out his fantasies.

Third, his financial status may suffer as a porn addict spends a lot of money to satisfy his cravings for pornographic materials. As he becomes more and more hooked to pornography, the porn addict unwittingly causes for the people he is intimately involved with. Partners may start to feel inferior because of the addict’s preference for the women portrayed in pornographic movies.

Because of these reasons, an attachment and too much preference to pornography can be problematic to the society. To solve this problem, several professionals are offering services to help a porn addict overcome his problem. Most of the time, these therapies are effective, but after a while the porn addict suffers a relapse.

The Obstacles to Overcoming Porn Addiction

Like an addiction to drugs, porn addiction is not easily shrugged off. One can go for months without viewing porn, but may suffer a relapse after being exposed to pornography once again.

These are some factors that may hinder a person suffering from porn addiction from shrugging off his obsession:

1. The abundance of easily downloadable pornographic material in the Internet. The computer nowadays is something that cannot be done away with in a person’s everyday life. A porn addict, like all other people, uses the computer and the Internet in a daily basis for work or for school. This could tempt rehabilitated porn addicts to once again view those videos and images again.

2. A person’s mental status. A porn addict, it is said, has low self-esteem and suffers from several insecurities. These insecurities, if awakened, could lead an addict to suffer a relapse of his condition.
